Natural Living

My Natural Lifestyle

Hello! I want to share with you all my journey to a natural lifestyle because to me being natural isn’t only about hair its about a healthy body and healthy eating as well. Which means making sure we use products that nourish our bodies as well as eating foods that give us the nutrients that we need to thrive. As  I embarked on my journey to natural hair I began to notice the labels on hair products  making sure they didn’t contain ingredients such as sulfates, parabens and mineral oil. This was my launching pad to reading the labels of food and body products as well. If I cared so much about what was going in my hair, I should also pay attention to what was in my food and body products as well.  I noticed that a lot of the body products I was using in the past had harmful chemicals in them. For instance, aluminum in deodorants and fluoride in toothpaste. I realized my teeth could be just as healthy while using a natural toothpaste. I wasn’t conscious of these things before I went natural, so I’m happy I finally opened my eyes to the truth.

Natural Body Products

Currently I’m using Toms Naturals Deodorant-Fresh Apricot

Toms of Maine Natural Long Lasting Deodorant Stick Apricot 077326611258 Natural Living

I love how this smells and it lasts all day! Unlike deodorants that contain Aluminum, Toms Naturals does not clog the sweat glands. It works while allowing  the body to work as it naturally should.

Toms of Maine Peppermint Toothpaste: Fluoride Free

I love this toothpaste, it honestly tastes just like any other toothpaste and did I mention it’s fluoride free? Read more about the dangers of fluoride here Underground Science

Organic Shea Butter

I’ve blended my Shea butter with my favorite oils! Whipped Shea butter is great for the winter and summer. Shea Butter is such a great moisturizer!

I’m also currently looking for a great all natural soap or body wash.

Healthy Diet

I’ve been a vegetarian for quite some time now though I still every now and then eat seafood. It’s been really hard giving up meat. Oh yes, I definitely remember just how good it tastes! At first I kind of just gave up red meat and pork and then finally after watch the movie “Earthlings” I decided to go vegetarian. Well actually my first choice was going vegan but once I started eating seafood it didn’t seem like the right title. But I don’t consume anything with milk or eggs so I’m sort of a vegan/vegetarian. lol Read more info about the dangers of milk here:

http://www.notmilk.com/kradjian.html

I’ve been drinking Blue Diamond Almond Milk-Vanilla, this is the best milk alternative in my opinion! It tastes just like milk!! I’ve found rice milk to be too watery and I’ve never really preferred the taste of soy milk. Trust me, give almond milk a try!

So most of the time when I mention that we’re vegetarian people they  ask “What do you eat then? as if there’s nothing else to eat. I love food and I love flavor so I’m the type of person who’ll find a way to make it work!

Here are my  day to day options for breakfast.

Fruits-Bananas, Apples or Pears

A bowl of series + fruit

Oatmeal+fruit

Dairy-free Dark Chocolate chip banana Pancakes and home fries

I love Home Fries!!!

Here are my day to day options for Lunch:

Veggie Burger on Onion Bun with mushrooms, tomatoes & Onion.

Black beans, lettuce, tomato, and salsa Wrap

BBQ Pineapple Pizza with tomatoes, yellow peppers & tomato sauce

Vegetable  Salad

Here are my day to day options for Dinner:

Steamed or Stir Fried Vegetables over rice with Asian sauce

Asian Glazed home fries over rice

3 course Steamed Vegetables and Garlic Bread

Pasta with tomato sauce

Sometimes we’ll have some of the lunch options for dinner and we occasionally eat pancakes and hf for dinner too! We’re always looking for new recipes! The ones listed above are the most common at my place.

Desserts

I’m going to dedicate a few posts to the topic of desserts because its one of my favorite things to think about, talk about, even looking at desserts makes me happy!! lol I know that probably sounds really greedy.lol But I’m definitely a dessert lover at heart.  Here are some of the vegan desserts that we’ve made so far:

Chocolate Chip Cookies

Banana Chocolate Cookies

Pumpkin Pie

Brownies

The vegan versions of these treats are slightly more healthier but trust me its not a big difference. We still use lots of sugar and all the regular ingredients. I sometimes eat a fruit salad as dessert, now that’s pretty healthy. So when we make some of the more decadent treats I usually eat them in moderation. I try not to over do it though its hard.

So that pretty much sums up the natural products I use and healthy eating habits I’ve acquired to maintain a healthy, body, spirit and mind.

Peace & Love

Homemade Flax Seed Gel

Finding Flax Seed and Oils

Hi Guys!! So you know I just had to make my own batch of flax seed Gel after all the rave reviews I’ve been seeing on YouTube! I’m using Naptural85′s recipe! I love her channel and videos! So I went out  and got me a bag of whole flax seeds for about $3. Then I went searching for the essential oils naptural85 mentioned in her video. Well the only stores in walking distance didn’t have rosemary essential oil, ylang ylang, or the other ingredients naptural85 used so I had to buy what they had available. I got tea tree oil, vitamin e, and carrot oil.

Making The Gel

So I got home and couldn’t wait to make my batch. I had my tongs ready, a small container with a lid, 1 pair of cut pantyhose and a pot big enough for two cups of water. So I measured 1/4 cups of flax seeds and poured it in, and then 2 cups of water and brought that to a boil. At first I was concerned since it took a while before it started to thicken but once it was boiling I saw the water getting thicker just like in the video! I turned the stove off and got the container, pantyhose, and tongs ready.  I then  poured the gel into the pantyhose which was inside the container and then started to strain the gel. Ok so right away my cheap dollar store tongs snapped and broke in half! lol They were plastic and pretty small. So then I grabbed two wooden spoons and tried to use those instead. Man was I having a slippery hard time!! It looked so much easier in the video. So I kept trying to squeeze the rest of the gel out of the pantyhose flax seed pouch but I wasn’t so successful. But nevertheless I still had a good amount of gel in my container so after about 20mins of making a mess I finally stopped and grabbed my oils.  I added in a good amount of each oil and stirred it into the gel. The consistency was really slick and goopy with a lot of movement. But the oils definitely gave the gel a wonderful scent. So I stored the gel and leftover flax seeds in 2 different containers in the fridge. I have a feeling that I won’t have to buy flax seeds for a while since I still have a lot left from the original package and I can reuse the seeds I used this time. Later that night I washed my hair, applied my leave in, detangled and brought out my homemade gel.

Using the Gel

I sectioned my hair into 3 parts and applied the gel to the section of hair I left out. It went on so slick and smooth. It felt better than the Eco styling gel that I was used to using. It felt similar to the consistency of kinky curly. Right away I could see that the gel was giving my hair great definition. I put in wet twists. So I finished each section and pulled all the twists back in a ponytail with hopes of keeping my twists extended. I wrapped it in a scarf and slept on it. The next day after taking off my scarf  my twists still felt a little damp so I let them air dry for a little and then finally took them out. Wow!!! My hair felt so soft and my twist out was flatter. My hair texture is about 4a/4b and it grows straight up and out. (like a tree) lol It doesn’t really lay down and usually when I take out my twists I end up with a lot of volume. So I was amazed that my hair could actually lay a little flatter. Now I love volume don’t get me wrong but not all the time, sometimes I want a dare I say more relaxed look with my natural hair. Especially during the hot summer! So I loved that and my hair didn’t feel crunchy at all but it definitely had hold. I wore it out and it also had more movement in the wind and I could feel the wind on my scalp!! lol Amazing!! I am loving this stuff and it’s only been one day! The next thing I am going to try is dry twists using the gel to see if I can lessen the shrinkage. So overall I have all good things to say about my flax seed gel however next time I need to get stronger tongs or maybe even a strainer. I’ll of course update you guys on how that works out. As well as post pics of my results. Stay tuned! Using Flax seed gel will save you money and give you healthy hair!! Make your own batch asap!!

Peace & Love!!
