My name is Yemisi and I have been in the Grand Cayman Islands since Fall 2010 as a medical student, though I was born in Nigeria and raised in the Midwest. Even though I am a student by day, I find that researching about hair occupies the little spare time I have. To be honest I didn’t make the decision to go natural for myself. My mum made it VERY CLEAR at a young age that I would not be creamy cracking my head under her watch. I guess one bad perm experience did it for her. She would say putting chemicals in my hair would destroy my hair. I thought it couldn’t be worse than the kids at school taunting me about my kurls, koils, and kinks. All of this IMMEDIATELY changed when my mum allowed me to do my own hair. I quickly pressed my hair in high school but got my first relaxer around the age of 18. Thank goodness by the time I was able to perm my hair, I had already discovered different creations to style and care for my hair (which is a great help now).
Funny enough for as long as I can remember I wanted to be natural. I guess that is why they say mums know best. My last perm was on July 2, 2009. I tried to go natural prior to that but I couldn’t hang with the two textures. I had a conference to go to and slapped the lye in it. Therefore, I knew the second time around I wouldn’t transition for long. I did 2 big chops and by January 2010 all of the lye was GONE. Sites like bglhonline.com, youtube.com, fotki.com, and others really gave me helpful insight the second time around!
I like the versatility and texture of my hair…I flat out just love my hair. You have to embrace your hair b/c it is YOURS and the texture won’t change any time soon. I love being known as the girl with the big afro, smile, and flower. Why would I want to give that up? So I decided to share my crazy natural hair chronicles with the world. I recently started a blog http://yemiadaynatural.blogspot.com/ , so I am new to the hair blogging world as a writer, but not quite that new to being natural. Check the site out and until next time love yourself, love your hair, and be loved!!
Peace & Hair
